Will Cuba Have a New President?
February 4th 2008 01:02
The notorious Castro Brothers, Fidel and Raul, have been a thorn in side of the United States for almost half a century. Ever since the two brothers and the Cuban Communist Party seized control of the country in 1959 the US has been anxiously waiting for political change in the small Caribbean country.
In Cuba, the nation wide National Assembly of Popular Power elections took place late last week and its no surprise that both Raul and Fidel were the country’s two most popular candidates. There were 614 candidates nominated for the assembly – all of which were either Communist Party members or pre-approved by the party – and it is no surprise that it is these 614 candidates which now make up the National Assembly of Popular Power.
The role of the National Assembly of Popular Power will now be to select the nation’s President. On February 24 it is possible that Cuba may have a new President. Something the country has not experienced since the revolution which overthrew Batista and bought Fidel to power in 1959.
Luis Garcia, a Cuban blogger/author now living in Sydney commented
‘Now that Fidel Castro has been “elected” to the National Assembly, there is feverish speculation in the international media as to whether the ailing 81-year-old dictator will hang on the position of head of State’
Recently all the talk has been about ‘when will Castro die and/or when will Castro step down as the Cuban Head of State’ but it is obvious for anyone who has ever been to Cuba that a huge portion of the country – especially people over the age of 35 – still see Fidel as the country’s best leadership option.
Whilst it is undeniable that Cuba’s election system is controlled by the people already in power it will nonetheless be interesting to see who the politicians themselves will vote for in the up and coming presidential election. Will it be the father of the revolution – the charismatic 81 year-old Fidel - or will it be the sterner more reclusive man who represents the nation’s military muscle, 76 year-old Raul. Or could it even be someone else entirely? Nah, no way!
