$US515 billion

February 7th 2008 04:12
America accounts for half of the world’s entire military spending.

With the release of the 2008 budget, the world’s most powerful military nation looks to be getting even bigger, with the US planning on increasing its military spending to a whopping $US515b this financial year. A figure which more than doubles the combined military expenditure of Japan, Britain, Russia and China.

With the US economy in the midst of recession talks and the medicare, education and transportation budgets having to be cut because of George W. Bush’s tunnel vision focus on military expenditure the latest US budget does not make for happy reading for any one living in the US. Except of course if you happen to work in the Pentagon.

In 2004, The National Priorities Project (NPP) an information resource service in the US, conducted a comprehensive study of the all US costs relating to the Iraq War and then took those figures and looked at how that money could have been better used for the benefit of more people.

The US invaded Iraq in 2003 – so only one year before this study was conducted – and already America had spent $US151, 256, 310 on the occupation of Iraq. The National Priorities Project estimates that the war costs $US10, 000 every five seconds – you do the maths!

According to the NPP, this ludicrous sum of money could have provided 1.3m homes for underprivileged Americans. A year’s health insurance for 90,000,000 children. Funded global anti-hunger movements for six years. Immunised all the world’s children for 50 years and even fully funded the world’s AIDS programs for 15 years.

Politicalwriting.net wishes to point out the injustice of this kind of uncontrolled spending and would like to refute the Bush Administration for its neglect of the needs of the American people.

It is truly grotesque! Talk about crimes against humanity!!

However, while the American economy rests on the shoulders of armament manufacture, this will continue.

I read an article, ages ago, that stated the first ranking source of national income in America was arms manufacture and sales, the second...illegal drug sales!

Makes you wonder doesn't it?

We can only hope, as members of the 'global village', that Obama gets in and puts a stop to this crap.

cheers
