Dmitry Medvedev, the first deputy Prime Minister to current Russian President Vladimir Putin, looks likely to become Russia’s next Head of State.
Polls are not yet closed but at this early stage and given the position of Mr. Medvedev, as the Kremlin’s favoured man, it looks like the fourth President of post-Soviet Russia will be a man made directly from the Putin mould.
Medvedev has been backed by Putin and the Kremlin the whole campaign and with reports from the Russian election commission giving Medvedev 69% of the vote with more than 70% of ballots counted, it looks like the hours of free media coverage granted to Medvedev by Russia’s state run broadcasters looks set to pay off.
When asked by reporters about his political plans Medvedev, not surprisingly answered, his policies would be ‘a direct continuation of that path which is being carried out by President Putin’.
Medvedev and Putin have had strong political ties for many years and share a very similar political ideology, so it comes as no surprise that the Kremlin have selected him as successor to the ever popular Putin.
It looks like the course laid out for Russia by Vladimir Putin during his eight years in power will be continuing for at least another four.
