McCain’s Money Trail

June 13th 2008 11:09
The race for the Whitehouse is on, and for my first salvo, I have decided to have a look at Senator McCain's contributions. I have used the website www.opensecrets.org which is run by the Center for Responsive Politics in Washington, D.C. They keep an accurate track of all the money each candidate receives and organize it into an easy to understand manner available to every person online. To be fair I will also be analyzing Senator Obama, but off course, Senator McCain should receive the first honor. Today I am only going to look at the top contributors tab on the aforementioned website:

I have highlighted the three sections that I find curious. The first many of you may not find so curious because I only found out today that Senator McCain has a lot of telecom immunity lobbyist’s working for his campaign. The EFF gets all the credit for breaking this story:

Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign has strong connections to the high-powered lobbyists employed by AT&T and other telecommunications companies to escape from responsibility for violations of federal law, with paid lobbyists occupying prominent positions in the upper echelons.

McCain is supposed to be about ‘straight talk’ yet what the telecom companies like AT&T did was against the law however they hope that the future President McCain will make life easier for them. I certainly hope not, but this is why I like Senator Obama and support him because he voted with 30 other Democrats to ensure that the Telco’s are liable for breaking the law. Big Business does not make its own rules; the people do, which is why AT&T have not donated to the Obama campaign.

The second highlighted box is not too surprising for anyone given that the GOP is republican and they would want Senator McCain to win in the general election. The last box is the most interesting but leaves a lot of questions unanswered. I had originally assumed when researching this article that The Blackstone Group was related to the infamous Blackwater International yet I could find no conclusive evidence available online that proves this. With that linkage blown out of the water, I had one of those Albert Einstein moments where the metaphorical bulb flashed over my head… The Chinese government owns a 10% stake in the Blackstone Group which has donated $82,600 to Senator McCain. Therefore we can logically conclude that the Chinese government has donated $8260 to Senator McCain’s campaign. This is no definite proof of course but given Senator McCain’s tendency for surrounding himself with Big Business, would it be too far to infer that maybe the Chinese government might want Senator McCain to be elected?
