Jose Ramos-Horta Shot!
February 11th 2008 02:06
East Timor’s President, Jose Ramos-Horta, has been shot in the stomach and is currently undergoing surgery at an Australian Military Base in Dili.
It is believed the Noble Peace Prize Laureate was shot in the belly when on a routine morning walk around the Timorese capital, Dili.
Reports coming out of the country say that two ‘unknown’ cars passed by Ramos-Horta’s presidential quarters on the outskirts of the Timorese capital and opened fire on the president and his two security personnel.
Reports coming out of Dili also indicate that the perpetrator of the heinous attack is none other than, Alfredo Reinado, the man who made world headlines early last year when he broke out of prison vowing to ‘bring down the Ramos-Horta/Xananna Gusmao government.
Alfredo Reinado is a former member of the Timorese Army and leader of a notorious band of disaffected former military personnel leading a campaign of violence and destabilisation against the ruling Timorese Government.
The violent and bitter divide between the East Timorese Government and the nation’s military has probably been the single greatest problem the small pacific nation has had to face since its independence from Indonesia in 1996.
