Castro has Retired
February 19th 2008 09:07
It is the end of an era in the small but controversial Caribbean country of Cuba. Fidel Castro, after almost 50 years in charge, has officially announced his retirement as the nation’s President.
In a letter published in the Cuban Communist Party’s official newspaper, the Granma, the country’s ailing 81 year-old leader decided it was finally time to hand over the presidency to his younger brother, Raul.
"I neither will aspire to, nor will I accept, the position of president of the council of state and commander in chief," wrote Castro.
Fidel Castro temporally handed over power to his younger brother Raul in July 2006 after reports circulated about the Cuban leader's growing battle with intestinal cancer.
The condition of Fidel Castro’s health is at this moment unclear. No official reason for the resignation has been announced. All Cuba can at this moment be certain of is that Raul Castro –Cuban military strongman since the 1959 revolution – is the country’s President for the time being.
The Cuban National Assembly of Popular Power will officially select the nation’s President on February 24.
