Attack Against Israel
February 5th 2008 01:29
Yesterday, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself to kingdom come in the small Israeli town of Dimona.
The attack took place inside a shopping centre and was responsible for killing one person and injuring 11.
The explosion occurred in a confined and populace area but could have been much worse if the bombers accomplice, whose explosives failed to detonate, had not been shot down by the Israeli authorities before the second explosion could take place.
The attack is said to have been carried out by a militia group, Aksa Martyrs Brigades, close affiliates of the Fatah party, ruled by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
At the moment it appears the infamous Hamas party, a legitimate political organisation who in 2006 won Palestinian popular support in the national elections but have since been condemned by the United States and Israel as a terrorist organisation, were not responsible for the attack.
Israeli has remained relatively free of such terrorist attacks over the last 18 months but with the Israeli government embarking on numerous campaigns of state sponsored terrorism in this time – relegating Hamas to the Gaza Strip, the Lebanon/Hezbollah conflict, bombings of Gaza and the West Bank and the continual oppression of the Palestinian people both in Gaza and in Israel - it is surprising that the Israeli streets have remained as calm as they have been.
Charlie Ifergan, a jewelry store owner who was in his store when the explosion occurred said, “At first I thought it was an electrical short circuit, but then I saw half a corpse next to me, and I understood it was an attack.”
This attack took place in a region which rarely sees such catastrophes. The sight of a severed corpse is something that no human being outside of warfare should ever have to see, but when the Israeli Government embarks on such rigorous state sponsored terrorist campaigns against the Arab world - military attacks responsible for the death of not only innocent civilians but the destruction of civil infrastructure - they have to realise that small scale terrorist attacks are now the only way Palestinians can stand up for their rights.
