Another American Shooting!

A shooting at an Illinois university kills five and injures 13 on Valentine’s Day.
The gunmen was a student, although not at the university were the shooting took place, and reports say that the man burst from behind a projection screen during a geology lecture. The man was dressed in all black and unleashed 30 rounds of ammunition on the students and teachers in the lecture hall and then killed himself.
This unfortunately seems to be happening more and more in the United States. Even reading about this particular shooting this morning, I felt a certain sense of apathy and disregard for the situation because of how frequently it happens.
It was only April last year that the infamous, Seung Hui Cho, embarked upon setting a new record as America’s most violent school shooting madmen when he killed 32 people at Virgin Tech.
At least once a year an American high school or college is forced to endure the psychotic yearnings of a madman. Here are some examples taken from the Times Online – bear in mind I am only talking about school/college shootings. This does not take into account the shopping mall shooting in Nebraska last December where eight were killed or the party shooting in Wisconsin last October were an off-duty sheriff’s deputy killed six.
April 2007: 22 people killed as a gunman goes on a rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech. October 2006: gunman goes on a rampage at an Amish school in Pennsylvania, shooting dead at least three girls before killing himself. September 2006: A gunman in Colorado shoots and fatally wounds a teenage schoolgirl, and then kills himself. September 2006: Two days later a teenager kills the headteacher of a school in Cazenovia, Wisconsin. November 2005: Student in Tennessee shoots dead an assistant principal and wounds two other administrators. March 2005: Schoolboy in Minnesota kills nine, and then shoots himself. May 2004: Four people are injured in a shooting at a school in Maryland. April 2003: Teenager shoots dead a head-teacher at a Pennsylvania school, and then kills himself.
Debates around this issue have constantly been in the media ever since 1999’s Columbine massacre and to me it is senseless to continue to debate about what drives these sadist killers to shoot up educational institutions. It is just interesting that they never seem to happen in any another society.
