American's just don't read newspapers

February 25th 2008 06:55
One in four newspaper jobs has disappeared in America since 2000.

Americans are increasingly turning to online sources for their news leaving the newspaper industry in the ‘land of the free’ in the worst shape it’s been in for many years.

It appears that media workers are leaving the media industry – radio, television and newspaper employment has dropped considerably since 2000 - to pursue careers in the lucrative world of marketing and communications.

Two Interesting Trends:

- Newspapers have traditionally accounted for over half the media jobs in America since 1990 but as of 2007 that figure has dropped to a measly 38%.

- In 2000 there were over 1 million people working in the American media industry compared to only 885,000 in 2007.

The Marketing Rise

The amount of people working in the American media industry - 885,000 - is a similar figure to the amount of Americans who now work in the marketing industry.

Bradely Johnson one of the people from AdAge.com who worked on this research states:

‘The reason for the change is that marketers still invest in marketing, but they have options far beyond paid media: digital initiatives, direct marketing, promotions and events, just to name a few. That creates more opportunities for consultants to help define strategies.’

The media industry is a business just like any other and in a country like America business has always been placed on a higher plain than the need for a free, functioning and vibrant media.

America must find a way of preventing its media industry from continuing to shrink because as the media industry shrinks and the marketing sector grows the media industry’s emphasis on business will increasingly distract it from its true function.

The media industry in any democracy should be there to discuss, critique and comment on government, inform its people about the world and make sure that politicians are made accountable for their actions.

With an un-healthy and shrinking media industry and a vibrant and lucrative marketing sector I can only see America sliding further down its dangerous path.
