A Cardboard Kevin Rudd Unveiled in Parliament
February 23rd 2008 00:50
Australian Parliament is so wonderfully entertaining. The language, the theatrics and the childlike bickering between MPs are features of Australian Parliament which are often not seen any other western country.
Australian politics seems so much more informal and juvenile compared to other western democracies and it is this informality and juvenility that I believe lends our parliamentary sittings a certain quality of charm.
Yesterday, in the House of Representatives, the opposition unveiled its life size cardboard cut out of Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. The unveiling of this humorous replica sparked wild scenes in parliament as the opposition called for the ‘real Kevin Rudd’ to make an appearance at the new Friday sitting.
An MP was ejected from the house, there was a required 15 minute cooling off period and passions flared as the Coalition demanded question time be introduced to the new Friday sittings.
‘The row erupted this morning when Mr Ciobo (the ejected Liberal MP) moved that there should be a Question Time every Friday, despite the Government's rules that there will be no Question Times and no divisions taken on Fridays,’ reported the ABC
The Coalition opposition sees the absence of Mr. Rudd as hypocrisy on the part of the Australian PM and stated
‘It's not good enough that Mr Rudd and his ministers are not here five days a week when they demand other members of Parliament to be here five days a week,’ he said.
‘We don't want to have cardboard Kevin here, we want the real Kevin Rudd to be here.’
